The Project

As a result of its rapid growth, the network outgrew its existing infrastructure and had become reliant upon an unintegrated broadcast IT system with inadequate services infrastructures. This service infrastructure enabled them to cope with the increasing production and reliability demands expected of the high-profile network, but only in the short term. To resolve its issue, Al Jazeera’s requirement was an upgraded data center facility to host a new system complete with a new MEP infrastructure and redesigned building to correct these shortcomings and allow them to operate successfully with room to grow.

Our Appointment

We were appointed to coordinate a network-wide system upgrade. We led a multi disciplined team to investigate the existing site wide infrastructure and develop a redesigned Master Plan for the reinforcement of all services to a tier 4 standard. The design and onsite implementation of the building and MEP works required the creation of a new 240 rack server suite and control rooms within a storage area of a recently constructed and operational building. We were tasked with developing a sufficiently flexible design to accommodate a system that had yet to be fully designed, with the capacity for +50% expansion.

The Benefit

Through a comprehensive discovery phase of the project requirements and strategy planning, and a detailed negotiation and development with the client team, we were able to implement a phased procurement of works packages to allow the system development to continue whilst on-site works progressed. Furthermore, we developed an infrastructure resilience strategy, which provided significant improvement on the existing systems while enabling the client to avoid over-investment where existing system limitations would have made the capital expenditure wasteful. The client was able to avoid very substantial costs without significant gain as a result of our involvement.
