The Project

As a partnership between The Priory Group and ADEK, Al Karamah School is the first school in the UAE dedicated to the needs of children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder. The school was carefully designed to provide an intimate and engaging environment, whilst ensuring children feel safe and secure. The school initially catered for 260 children (phase 1) but given their success phase 2 provides additional spaces for vocational learning for older children. A swimming pool was also planned for the existing school. Phase 1 was delivered via the refurbishment of an old Emirate school, and phase 2 is a new build extension within the boundary of the site.

Our Appointment

We were appointed as project and commercial managers for Phase 1 in Q2 2018 with the specific brief to complete the refurbishment by the end of Q4. The timeline requested required an extremely tight programme considering that the design was not yet completed. Additionally, a contractor appointment was still required. The school subsequently opened to its first students in January 2019. Due to the success of the first phase delivery, we were then retained to deliver phase 2, a new build extension that is currently ongoing. The new extension to the school is expected to be completed in Q3 2020.

The Benefit

Having already earned the trust of ADEK for previous successful work collaborations, we focused on forming strong relationships with The Priory Group project team from the project’s commencement. We adopt a proactive, ‘can do’ attitude from the very beginning of our projects, and this school project was no exception. We acted as their trusted advisor for both with the contracting and ADEK teams. Phase 1 was completed on time and within budget, something that even the client felt was challenging at the start of our appointment. Phase 2 is currently on site and under progress and will also be delivered to meet our client’s requirements and expectations.
